Perception Preview
There was very little Nathan could do to
stop what he knew in his heart was inevitable.
He had struggled to convince them, and given all he could. He had hoped
they might listen, but his every effort was met with deaf ears and skeptical
heart. The feeling of helplessness that
fell upon him with each passing second was almost more than he could bear. To stand and watch knowing he could not
affect the passage of time, nor stop what he alone knew was about to happen
filled him with rage. An inner anger he could
neither control nor release in any helpful way. The anger consumed him with
each passing second.
Within hours all he knew and had ever known
would change. Standing beside Lauren, he
wondered if he would he ever hear her voice again or feel her touch? Would he see his family or friends, or even
feel the warmth of another sunrise?
Would this be his last memory and his final resting place? Entombed in
helplessness, among the company of skeptics and stubborn militants, obsessed
with war and fear of the unknown?
As they bustled around the room doing their
jobs, honoring their responsibilities and oaths, they held firm to their poise
of fearlessness. Nathan knew the truth in this though and in their hearts they
were petrified of what was about to happen.
He alone knew it did not have to happen.
He alone carried that burden, and once entombed, he alone would carry
the weight of that knowledge into the afterlife, if there even was one.
On
the huge command center screen he could see the massive airship and the ever
present soft orange glow. The mere sight
of it was as frightening as anything he had ever seen.
Although he was the only one who knew the
truth, he could not help but understand their fear and why their minds closed
in and refused to accept any alternative outcome. It was fight or flight, and they could not
fly. To them, there was only one choice
that remained; however futile.
Just a glance at the massive craft would
convince any sane person that it could not be brought down, and this plan would
not work. But they were not sane. Sanity had lost hold long ago, replaced by
fear and desperation. As any caged
animal would do, they felt there was only one choice; fight and hope for the
best. After all, it’s not like there was
anywhere to run. An entire planet cannot
evacuate.
“Two minutes.” the McCray called out as
Nathan’s heart began to pound.
The countdown had begun. If only they knew. If only he could tell them that they were not
facing any alien warship or UFO. This
was no hostile act of aggression. Throughout their lives they had seen dozens
of movies on Alien’s attacking earth but this was not reality. This is not what was happening. Aliens do not exist; they never did. He wondered what more he could have done or
said. They were not two minutes from
attacking hostile aliens from a science fiction movie scene. They were two
minutes from attacking themselves. They
were about to begin a war against humanity.
